Happy Friday (the 13th)!

The fear of Friday the 13th, also known as paraskevidekatriaphobia, is a real thing. It’s a common superstition that many people believe in, even if they don’t know it. But what’s so scary about this particular day?

Well, for starters, there’s the whole association with Jason from the Friday the 13th movie franchise. (not our Jason) But even without Jason lurking around, there are plenty of other things to be afraid of on Friday the 13th.

For example, many people believe that bad luck is more likely to strike on this day. They might be afraid of having accidents, losing their jobs, or even getting into fights. Some people are so superstitious that they avoid going out or doing anything important on Friday the 13th altogether. That’s NOT us – and that’s not you – right?

Of course, there’s no scientific evidence to support the belief that Friday the 13th is an unlucky day. But that doesn’t stop people from being afraid of it. In fact, some studies have shown that people are more likely to report accidents and other negative events on Friday the 13th, even if those events are no more likely to happen on that day than on any other day.

Of course, if you’re truly afraid of Friday the 13th, there are a few things you can do to protect yourself:

  • Avoid walking under ladders.

  • Don’t step on cracks in the sidewalk.

  • Don’t break a mirror.

  • Don’t cross a black cat.

  • And whatever you do, don’t go to Camp Crystal Lake.

But seriously, the best way to deal with your fear of Friday the 13th is to simply laugh it off. Remember, it’s just a day. And besides, there are much scarier things in life to be afraid of, like clowns and public speaking.

FRIDAY (the 13th):

In no particular order we’ll give two options to do tonight.

One would be to get yourself to Raisin Hell Ranch. That other Jason will be there for sure – and a few of his best friends. What could be scarier than the areas top rated haunted cornfield on the spookiest night of the year?

Early reports say it’s even spookier this year!

The other option would be to get down to The Crest Theatre. They are playing The Shining – and yes you’ve seen it a few times in reruns on tv but nothing is like seeing it on the big screen with a few of your best friends! Show time is at 8 PM and remember to bring cash! Did you know that Stephen King didn’t think the movie version was scary at all?

Bonus points for wearing a pale blue dress with your twin sister. IYKYK.

SATURDAY:

Assuming that you live to make it to see the sun rise, remember that today we’re in for a partial solar eclipse. You might see this called an Annular Solar Eclipse but for us it’s a partial.

An annular solar eclipse happens when the moon is at its farthest point from Earth, or apogee. That makes it appear slightly smaller than the sun. During full annularity, or the maximum phase of the eclipse, the size differences make visible an orange halo around the moon — the so-called “ring of fire.” What we’ll see here will be close but not quite. Horseshoes, hand grenades… Partial Solar Eclipse.

It’ll start at 8:06 and 15 seconds in the morning when the Moon moves in front of the Sun. At 9:22 and a full second, it will be at it’s fullest coverage for us and then be fully clear at 10:46 and 28 seconds.

DO WE NEED TO TELL YOU TO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN?

Just in case, we just did. Never look directly at the Sun. You can seriously hurt your eyes, and even go blind. Proper eye protection, like eclipse glasses or a special solar filter, is the only safe option. Sunglasses don’t work. Use a pinhole camera like you did in grade school. Your kids can show you how.
